Path to Sustainability

PLAN-IT Hardware was launched by California Hardware, a leading distribution and logistics company whose roots go back to 1849. With that kind of history, it was natural for us to think carefully about our future and our legacy. Our ideas about sustainability have taken on new meaning. While PLAN-IT Hardware is focused on making green products widely available through mainstream hardware and home improvement stores, we are not stopping there. We're undertaking an ongoing program of change so that we are continuously reducing the impact of our own operations.

At PLAN-IT Hardware's small office in San Francisco, we're implementing greener practices wherever we can. We're using compact fluorescent light bulbs in all our fixtures and take full advantage of our ample skylights. Our computers and office equipment is either used or Energy Star rated. We use 100% PCW paper in our printers and reuse as much paper as we can before recycling. All our office furniture is high quality and one would never know that we salvaged most of it (free), or purchased previously owned. Coming soon, green energy offsets. On an ongoing basis we work with our product suppliers to help them reduce packaging and design in greener features such as less toxic ingredients, recycled or recyclable content, durability, etc.

California Hardware has taken some initial steps to reduce the impact of operations at its distribution center in Ontario, California. They've been a major user of paper and have shifted to using stock with recycled content. They've installed energy efficient lighting and they no longer stock the lunch room with Styrofoam cups. They are investing in information technology that will boost efficiencies. They've also pioneered the use of "virtual tradeshows" that eliminate travel and goods shipments, and therefore operate with just a fraction the carbon footprint of a traditional tradeshow.

The path to sustainability is long and we've taken the first steps. There's much more to be done. We'll keep you posted along the way.
